Lost in America - Episodes 1-3 by Laura Fitzgerald

This book grabbed me from the beginning. It had a unique plot and as the story went on, I couldn't put it down and needed to know what was going to happen. I wasn't crazy about the heroine, Kendra. She just wouldn't listen to anyone, but she did it with well intentions to figure out the truth and protect her mom. Kendra has a strong need to keep her mom safe after she lost her father and her mother lost her husband on the day of 9/11.

After almost dying herself, Kendra is given a gift called Insight, where she can see things that happen in the future and try to stop it. Such as kidnappings, rapes, murder, etc. There are several people telling Kendra to trust them, but she isn't sure who to trust. And I can't blame her. By the time episode 3 ended, I was as confused as she was.

This book ends with a cliffhanger. I was under the impression the series was complete, but it is not. I checked the authors website and Amazon, but did not come across when book 4 will be out. :insert frown face: because I am dying to know what happened.

For now, I will be keeping an eye out for the book and hope that it is released soon.

Lethal in Love 6 by @msomerswriter - Book 6 - the final episode in a thriller serial

Be sure to check out my reviews for book 1, book 2,book 3, book 4, and book 5.
The series has come to an end and we've discovered who the killer was. The killer was a tad bit of a shocker as well as their accomplice. I really enjoyed the way the story unfolded and the predicament that Jayda was in. Even after being captured, she fought hard and wasn't willing to just give up.  I don't know what I would do in the situation, but Jayda was going to go out punching.

Thankfully, that didn't happen and we got the happily ever after we are after as a reader. I really like the way this whole series unfolded and the way the story ended for Sean and Jayda. As characters, they both grew a lot.

The only thing I would have liked to see was a scene with the mother in the last book. Through out the episodes, Jayda is needing to support of her mom after her sister's murder. We meet her in only one book and I felt like we needed a scene with her at the end.

Over all, I really enjoyed this series. I like who it was split up into different episodes. I didn't feel like the books were too short. They were all a good length and ended with the cliffhangers we all hate to love.

This is an author I will be looking for more from in the future.

Lethal in Love 5 by @msomerswriter - Book 5 in a thriller serial

Be sure to check out my reviews for book 1, book 2, book 3, and book 4.
Quite a bit happened in this episode. It kept my attention as I read each page, watching the whole story unfold. The author is dripping ideas around on who the Night Terror might be--or at least the copy cat. We still aren't certain if it's a copy cat or the orginal Night Terror. But it is someone who knows Jayda and it seems as though the person wants revenge toward her father and her.

A lot of new twists were added during this, one I had a feeling was coming. It's hard to believe there is only one more episode as this story unfolds. I am ready to see this all tied together and know who is behind it.

In this part, Sean and Jayda really begin to move into their relationship together. As a reader, I am very happy they are over the back and forthness and are just embracing being together.

Now onto part 6!

Lethal In Love 3 by @msomerswriter - Book 3 in a thriller serial

And the series continues. I'm now on episode 3 of 6. Check out my review for book 1 and book 2.

The story really began to heat up in book 3. At this point, there are so many mysteries, my head is buzzing and trying to figure out how it all ties together. Who is The Night Terror? What does Jayda's father have to do with it? As well as all the people who live around Jayda in her apartment building? And of course, why is The Night Terror targeting her?

There is still an underlying romance plot between the reporter Seth and detective Jayda. Though, in this book I just wasn't feeling the connection between them. Jayda was very cold toward Seth, so for me it would be amazing if he in fact is still at all interested. I'm hoping in the next book, she will begin to be nicer to him. Maybe...

And this book ends with the worst cliffhanger so far. Wow, I couldn't believe it ended when it did. Needless to say, I am still hooked on this series and anxiously awaiting book 4.

Lethal In Love 2 by @msomerswriter - Book 2 in a thriller serial

Installment two in the Lethal In Love series is now live. Check out my review for book 1 HERE.

At the end of book 1, we are left with a broken heart from Jayda after a big loss that was from a murder. I don't want to say much, so I don't give away spoilers. The book picks up almost where book 1 left us. Jayda is a detective and is determined to find The Night Terror serial killer. She teams up with reporter Seth, who is also someone she'd very attracted to and vice versa.

I enjoy the flirting between them, though it wasn't as much in this book, which I found realistic with the loss Jayda just had. It's hard to review a serial without giving away spoilers, so this is going to be short.

The writing was good and I was pleased with the pace of book 2. This one wasn't as intense or emotional is book 1, but I'm still intrigued to move on to book 3 as we dive deeper into who the killer might be.

Killing Secrets by @DianneEmley #giveaway

This was a very interesting book and kept me reading. A teacher and student are murdered and it's made to look like a murder suicide. The male student being obsessed with the teacher and he has a history of attempted suicide.

There are a lot of twists and turns in this book as I tried to figure out the truth of who did it, as well as the mystery around the killed teenage boys family.

I found the writing to be good. It flowed well. The author did great on her descriptions and showing us the scenes instead of telling us. I really liked Nan and her daughter Emily. Enjoyed seeing how they reacted.

This isn't the first book in the Nan Vining Mystery series, however it's the first one I've read. I didn't feel like I was missing anything or any pieces of the story by not reading the prior books. I would be interested in reading more stories from this author and in the series. She actually surprised me with the ending, and that's a hard thing for writers to do. I thought I had figured out who the killer was, but I was wrong.

Lacey's Rating:

About The Book
For fans of Patricia Cornwell, Tana French, and Lisa Gardner comes a razor-sharp novel of suspense featuring Detective Nan Vining—a single mother whose worlds collide when her teenage daughter stumbles upon a grisly double homicide.

When she gets the call, Nan Vining responds as a mother first and a detective second. Her daughter, Emily, has made a gruesome discovery in a secluded section of a Pasadena park: a pretty, popular young teacher from Emily’s high school and a bright yet troubled transfer student—both dead and bloody in a copse of trees. But the crime scene isn’t the only thing that seems off to Detective Vining. There’s also the cocky classmate who was with Emily in the park—the boyfriend she never knew about. What else doesn’t she know about her daughter?

As she attempts to channel both her maternal and investigative instincts into one single point of focus, Vining’s superiors at the Pasadena Police Department are moving at lightning speed. Before the evidence has even been processed, the case is closed as a clear-cut murder/suicide: a disturbed teenager murders his teacher, then takes his own life. Vining doesn’t buy it. Now she’s chasing dangerous, powerful people with secrets they would kill for—and taking them down means risking her own flesh and blood.

Ruby Ink by L.J. Wilson - Book 1 in a New Series #Giveaway @LJWilsonBooks

Ruby Ink wasn't what I expected. The cover made me think this book was going to be my typical romance story I like to read. However, there was much more to this book and I was pleasantly surprised.

Aaron and Ruby were each others first loves until Aaron goes to prison for attempting to kill her father. You see, Aaron got involved with the wrong crowd and became a drug trafficker. When he's released from prison 7 years later, he still long for Ruby. The woman he'll never get over.

For much of the story, Ruby isn't in it. There are other mysteries and suspenseful plots unfolding, but without giving too much away, when Ruby does enter the picture again--sparks fly. She may hate him for attempting to kill her father, but she can't deny how she feels about him.

The book ends, resolving Ruby and Aaron's issue, but does have a but of a cliffhanger, which is fine by me. It let's me know this author will be writing more of this story and I can't wait to see what happens next. There are 5 siblings, so I am assuming that each one will be getting their own book. I can't wait to read the next installment.

Lacey's Rating:

About The Book:

Ruby Ink is the first book in this sensual romance series—journeys of intrigue, seduction, and satisfying storytelling. The Clairmont siblings, known as the "Tribe of Five" —Alec, Aaron, Honor, Jake and Troy—are complex characters whose individual stories and intricate love lives drive these dynamic new novels.

In Ruby Ink, Aaron Clairmont has been granted an early parole. He returns home to Nickel Springs and finds employment at Abstract Enchantment, a trendy new inn. But Aaron’s mind can’t let go of its predecessor, the vintage Rose Arch Inn, the setting for his passionate love affair with Ruby Vasquez. Ruby—the girl Aaron lost after his secret underworld life unraveled, shocking everyone who thought they knew him.

Freedom comes fast at Aaron—a family desperate to reconnect, an employer cast as his savior, and the steamy memories he can’t escape. Just as Aaron surrenders to starting anew, he realizes the diabolical trap he’s been lured into—a fresh hell that makes prison look like a country club. Lives are at stake, his family and Ruby’s. Ruby Vasquez—the woman Aaron never thought he’d see again. The one destined to collide with his future.

A serial killer and stalker after a psychic woman - Keep Me Safe by Maya Banks

This was my first book by Maya Banks. I've heard her name for years, but I've just not picked up a book. Keep Me Safe was what I needed to read, I just didn't know it. I was sucked in from the beginning with the suspenseful plot. I had to know how Ramie was going to catch the serial killer who was stalking her.

She turns to a family that she helped in the past. Tori, the youngest of the crew, was someone Ramie helped with her psychic abilities. Ramie is able to take an item from a victim and go into their head to find them. However, when she does this, she goes through what they are. Rape, beatings, etc.

I was surprised by the fact that Tori and two of her brothers had an issue with their protection agency helping Ramie. After all, she saved Tori's life. When Caleb, the hero of the story, helps her to get away and catch the stalker/serial killer, I was kinda ashamed of his siblings. How they couldn't be more thankful toward Ramie. Without her, Tori would have been dead. But this angst between them all does add to the plot some.

Since this is my first Maya Banks book, I'm not fully familiar with her writing style. With that being said, if you're a big romance reader like myself, don't go into this book looking for romance, but more of the suspense. I see it's categorized as a romantic suspense on Amazon, but the romance part is lacking. Yes, there is kissing and sex between Ramie and Caleb. What fell short for me, was the chemistry. It seemed like they just got together, never any attraction. I never knew either was interested in one another until they went to bed together. But as I said, this may be the genre.

The suspense/thriller is what makes this book. For that reason alone, I loved it. I want to read the rest of the series, as well as more by this author.

Lacey's Rating:

About The Book:

A sizzling story of a woman who risks her life and her heart to find a wealthy man’s missing sister—the first novel in a sexy new romantic suspense series from #1 New York Times bestselling author Maya Banks

When Caleb Devereaux's younger sister is kidnapped, this scion of a powerful and wealthy family turns to an unlikely source for help: a beautiful and sensitive woman with a gift for finding answers others cannot.

While Ramie can connect to victims and locate them by feeling their pain, her ability comes with a price. Every time she uses it, it costs her a piece of herself. Helping the infuriatingly attractive and impatient Caleb successfully find his sister nearly destroys her. Even though his sexual intensity draws her like a magnet, she needs to get as far away from him as she can.

Deeply remorseful for the pain he’s caused, Caleb is determined to make things right. But just when he thinks Ramie's vanished forever, she reappears. She’s in trouble and she needs his help. Now, Caleb will do risk everything to protect her—including his heart. . . .

Visit Sunset Villa in Stranger At Sunset by Eden Baylee

A vacation in Jamaica sounds like a great place to escape. Especially a visit to the Sunset Villa, which is the resort in this book Stranger at Sunset.

The writing pulled me into this story. The author writes very well and is easy to follow. I enjoyed her style and would read her again. Stranger At Sunset grabbed my attention starting with the blurb and in to the story. Over all, I enjoyed the story.

There were several point of views to keep up with and at times, I had a hard time, or even wondered why I needed to know what this person was doing on the vacation. I kept reading, figuring I would soon find out. This book was classified as a thriller/mystery. So as I read each scene, I figured there was a reason, the story was being set up. The thriller/mystery genre is one I enjoy a lot. I don't like to say anything negative, but the suspense didn't come in until about 80% of the book had been read, and even then within two chapters, the author let us know who the killer was. I would've liked to see the death come sooner and the suspense held out longer.

With that being said, I did still enjoy the story. I am curious about one of the characters, Kate, and what is in store for her next. The book ends leading me to believe that there will be another, but not in a cliff hanger type way. Everything in this story is tied up with a bow and resolved.

All in all, I would recommend this book to a reader who wants to step away from romance for a bit, and get to know a few sets of characters who have interesting lives. Many of the characters introduced in this story, I am curious where their lives have gone since vacation, so I'm curious to know if the author will use any of them in her next book.

My rating:

Vacation can be a killer.

Dr. Kate Hampton, a respected psychiatrist, gathers with a group of strangers at her favorite travel spot, Sunset Villa in Jamaica. Included in the mix are friends of the owners, a businessman with dubious credentials, and a couple who won the trip from a TV game show.

It is January 2013, following the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. The luxury resort is struggling, not from the storm, but due to a scathing review from caustic travel writer, Matthew Kane. The owners have invited him back with hopes he will pen a more favorable review to restore their reputation.

Even though she is haunted by her own demons, Kate feels compelled to help. She sets out to discover the motivation behind Kane's vitriol. Used to getting what he wants, has the reviewer met his match in Kate? Or has she met hers?

Stranger at Sunset is a slow-burning mystery/thriller as seen through the eyes of different narrators, each with their own murky sense of justice. As Kate's own psychological past begins to unravel, a mysterious stranger at Sunset may be the only one who can save her.

Strong is Sexy Heroine of the Week: Aiyana Cassidy & Kendra

Book: Run Like Hell
Author: Adam Gaffen
Heroine: Aiyana Cassidy, Kendra

Her name was Aiyana Cassidy and she was thirty-two years old. Half Irish and half Native American, her name meant ‘Eternal Bloom‘, though everyone called her Cass. Tall, nearly two meters, and slim, she had long auburn hair that trailed down her back (when it wasn’t pinned up for work)... But it was her eyes that were her most memorable feature – pale, ice-blue eyes that seemed to gaze deep into the soul of anyone she talked to.

She’d grown up in a small town in northern Minnesota, part of the Northern Imperium. Her childhood was uneventful, she thought. Science fair winner in sixth grade for her design of a hypersonic transport, she’d always shown a flair for design and engineering. So it wasn’t a surprise when she announced, political differences be damned, she was going to attend MIT...

Seven years at MIT later, she left with her Master’s in Quantum Mechanics and a Doctorate in Optical Engineering. The Heavy Lift Corporation hired her immediately, to help design the next generation of Photonic Laser Thrusters (PLT), and she moved to New Mexico and the Los Alamos laboratories. There she was given her own research team and budget and allowed the freedom to work as she pleased... Her professional life flourished, but her personal life floundered for a time. Until, that is, she forced herself to take an entire night off.

Kendra had skipped college entirely, going directly to the San Fernando Valley and getting into the sensies. Shorter than Aiyana by several centimeters, she was blonde, carried true green eyes, and was fuller across the hips and bust, a legacy of her donor-mother. From her earliest years, she’d loved the old ‘television’ programs of the twentieth century. Now, after several years, she had made enough money, and invested wisely enough, to semi-retire. Rare was her on-screen performance, and rarer still a public appearance. She had purchased a large spread off the Jemez Mountain Trail, fifty klicks west of Los Alamos. The remote location was her attempt to ensure privacy, as much as was possible. When her studio wanted her to appear for a premiere, she insisted, and had the clout to ensure, that the event take place near her new home. That led to the encounter with Aiyana, and the renewal of their friendship.

Cover for 'Run LIke Hell'So how do an optical engineer and a movie producer end up in a killer's crosshairs, and who's really behind it?

That's what Run Like Hell is about!
Blurb:
Wedding days are supposed to be memorable, but probably not like this. Not with an assassination attempt and fleeing your home and country for reasons you don't understand. But that's exactly what happens to Aiyana Cassidy. Now, she's on a quest to find out who's chasing her, what they want, and how she can stop them.

Set a century from now, this novella is the first of the Cassidy Chronicles.

From Reader, to Writer, to Author… Carolyn Wren Talks About The Diplomat's Daughter and Her Journey

Last week, I gave a friend the purchase link for my debut novel. She asked if it was for, “the whole lot.”
My first instinct was to laugh, then I realized in her mind it was a valid question.  She knew I had written a series of seven books, and sold the series to a publisher weeks ago and yet they are still not out?  What was taking so darn long?

It was then I knew I had made the transition from reader, to writer, to author.

Three years ago, before I started writing, I lived in that world where books miraculously appeared.  Where authors created, people and stories. And publishing houses bought, printed and sold them. Now I know writing the book is the beginning of the journey, not the end.

Diplomat's Daughter (The Protectors Book 1)When I sat down to write my first work I was clueless as to the process.  As a book-keeper for an international minerals company, my world revolved around numbers not words.  Until one day when I woke up with a scene so clear in my head it was imperative I write it down.  So I did, and within six months I had created a seven part Romantic Suspense series.  Had I taken writing courses? Read writing craft books? Researched the do’s and don’ts online? Nope.  I simply started writing and didn’t stop.

I had no thoughts of publishing, or fame and fortune.  Just the newly discovered joy of creating stories.  A year went past.  My seven books turned into eleven.  All sat on my desktop or in the hands of eager test readers.  What on earth did I do now?

A chance article in the newspaper, pointed me to a one day publishing seminar held at the local University.  This seemed like a good idea, so I went along.

That day goes down in my writing history, as one of the worst experiences ever.  This seminar should have been subtitled, “don’t even bother; you are all doomed to fail.”  Instead of an informative series of talks on the intricacies of the publishing world,  the eager, freshly minted writers in the audience were maligned, berated and even insulted for a full eight hours.

One lady, who raised the question of writing romance was cut down mid-sentence.  We are not here to discuss romance, she was told.  We are here to discuss legitimate writing.

Such worthy quotes still stay with me. “Without an agent your work will never even get looked at.” And. “Don’t even bother submitting your first manuscript.  No one will publish a debut author.”

The last comment made me curious.  How is one to relinquish the tag of debut author, if no house will publish your first book? I watched in anger and disbelief, as the moral in the room sunk lower and lower. At the end, we all filed out, defeated, heads bent, feet dragging.

To this day, I wonder how many authors went home and never wrote again, or even worse, deleted manuscripts sitting on laptops.  That thought makes me very sad, and very angry.

From a personal viewpoint I simply dismissed the day as a pointless waste of time and went back to my writing. A few months later I was reading a book by Nalini Singh and logged into her website to find out about other books in her series.  Whilst there, I read her post about the importance of finding a writing association, and about the valuable resources they offer. This lead to an online search, and the discovery of, Romance Writers of Australia.

What a difference from the so called, ‘seminar’ of the previous year.  These wonderful people understood new writers, encouraged and chatted, praised and commiserated when needed.  And most importantly, did not say the word, ‘Romance’ in quiet guilty whispers. Now I started to learn what I was doing right, and what I was doing wrong.  And let me just say, that finding out what the term, ‘head hopping’ meant after writing eleven books, was a bit of a shocker! I remember looking at the thousands and thousands of words in my completed books folder and resigning myself to a lot of rewrites.

Only a few weeks after joining the, RWA I entered their annual competition for unpublished writers called, ‘The Emerald’.  To my complete and utter shock, I started to progress through the rounds.  I entered the international competition, ‘The Daphne Du Maurier' awards, and again the same thing happened.

At this point, I sat down and began to seriously contemplate my next step.  Could I actually do this? Could I be published one day? Was I brave enough to try? With the incredible love and support of my husband, I started to do research.

Fast forward, to August 2012.  I won ‘The Emerald’, I got to the finals of the, ‘Daphne Du Maurier’ and I received a contract offer from, ‘Secret Cravings Publishing’.

And I was still mostly clueless… but I began to learn.

First lesson.  Manuscripts are not books.  Those pages and pages of words are not a book.  They are a draft, which with hard work, will become a book.

Second lesson.  Your editor is your boss.  She is not there to ruin your manuscript; she is there to turn your manuscript into a published book.

Third lesson.  Editing is a part of an author’s life, it is a necessity.  Being precious about that sentence you really like and want to keep, regardless of all the reasons why it should clearly go, does not help anyone.
In the weeks leading up to my very first edits, and the learning of the above lessons, I freely admit to being a mess of nerves.  What if my editor hates it? What if she changes every single word? What if it ends up being no longer my book?

I discovered something very interesting about myself.  I could worry myself into a small quivering wreck sitting in the corner.  Or I could take this invaluable information and use it to make myself a better writer.  It was the right choice. When the round 1 edits arrived, I looked at my manuscript logically and objectively.  Yes that’s right, that comment makes no sense in the context of the chapter.  No I don’t need all those extra explanations in the middle of that paragraph.  Yes that is head-hopping and needs to go.

I sliced through dialogue I considered pure Shakespeare when I wrote it.  Merrily adjusted sentences to allow for a clean flow and corrected foolish mistakes, carefully pointed out by someone looking at the story with a clear clean set of eyes.

Editors are not only necessary, they are essential.

But getting published isn’t all hard work.  There comes that joyous day when the cover art arrives.  When words become pictures! And the characters in your head are there for the world to see. What a day.  What an amazing fantastic day.  I have six more books due for release in 2013 and every one of them will be exciting.  But I suspect, seeing the cover art for my first book will always stay with me.

Finally the big day arrives.  Final proofreading, writing the author bio, and the dedication. Then release day.

Seeing my name for the first time, on the cover of a book. My published book! Is another memory I will hold close.  All the hard work melts away.  The agonizing over the submission letter.  The time consuming and sometimes frustrating task of writing a synopsis that is concise, without skipping over the plot.  The waiting every day and obsessively checking emails to see if the publishing house has replied. Then when they do, the task of edits, corrections and revisions.

It is all worth it.

I am no longer clueless.  Nor am I an expert.  I still need my editor and my publishers to guide me through.  But I know now that it takes hard work, time and effort to get a book published.

Now I am an author and proud of it.

So when my friend asked why only one book was coming out, even though I had written seven.  I smiled and told her, ‘all good things come to those who wait’.
